Short biography

Matt has played sax since he was 14 years old. But it was actually as a pianist that he began gigging professionally working with his own jazz trio in 1994. It wasn’t long before Matt was in demand as a keyboard player with bands and theatre shows performing soul, disco, rock, funk, jazz, latin American, rock ‘n’ roll and mainstream pop. As a multi-instrumentalist, he also stood in on guitar & bass guitar with several bands.

His passion has always been composing and arranging. It wasn’t long before Matt was band-leader, arranging big band scores and creating orchestral backing tracks for a Frank Sinatra tribute show ‘Just To Be Frank’ and a ‘Surely Bassey’ tribute/ Bond themes show. With these acts, he played at events all over Europe and the Middle East.

The huge range of music genres and eras in which Matt has worked has given him a knowledge and passion for a broad range of music. Matt has embraced all those genres in his sax repertoire as well as venturing into some new ones.

Although Matt has played sax since a teenager, he didn’t start playing professionally until 1997 when he founded ‘Skaface’, his own ska & reggae band. With an energetic set of Madness, Specials, The Beat & Bad Manners classics, the band toured the UK and Ireland over 4 years.

As an extra touch on ‘Surely Bassey’ events, Matt started to play Bond Themes as ‘The Man With The Golden Sax’ and pre-dinner sax sets with the Sinatra show.

In 2007, Matt started playing solo sax with his self- produced backing tracks for Weddings and banqueting functions. Initially meant only as an extra top-up on his piano bookings, it soon became clear that, with his unique broad repertoire, his sax playing was growing hugely popular. By 2010 solo sax bookings far outweighed all others, and Matt became exclusively a solo sax player for events and Weddings.

Since 2007 Matt has performed for hundreds of Weddings and functions all over the UK from Kent to Aberdeen.

Types of events have included celebrity hospitality events all around London including at the Dorchester, Savoy & Inter-Continental hotels, a James Bond themed Ball in Monte Carlo and hundreds of Weddings at venues from central London to the shores of Loch Lomond.

Matt still plays piano & guitar in his own studio, recording his own music as well as producing more backings for his ever-growing unique sax repertoire.

Whether gigging or not, Matt loves to travel and see new places. He has based himself in West Yorkshire for this reason. He lives only a few minutes from the M1 / M62 / A1 motorway network, almost equidistant from London and Edinburgh.
